The Most Common Cockroach Species in Lampasas County
The American cockroach β also called the palmetto bug or water bug β is the most common species we treat in Central Texas homes. Despite the name, it thrives here because of our warm, humid conditions. These roaches grow up to 2 inches long, run fast, and can fly when disturbed. They're mostly an outdoor species that moves indoors through plumbing and cracks in the foundation.
The German cockroach is smaller, brown, and prefers to live entirely indoors. It's harder to eliminate because it reproduces extremely fast β a single female can produce hundreds of offspring in her lifetime. German cockroaches are most common in kitchens and bathrooms where food and moisture are available.
Why They Keep Getting Into Your Home
- Sewer and drain systems β American roaches regularly enter through floor drains and plumbing voids
- Gaps around pipes under sinks and around utility penetrations through walls
- Exterior doors without tight-fitting door sweeps, especially garage doors
- Grocery bags, cardboard boxes, and used appliances brought inside
- Shared walls in apartments, duplexes, or attached townhomes
What Cockroaches Are Looking For
Roaches need three things: food, water, and shelter. Cutting off access to these is your first line of defense:
- Store all food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs and spills immediately
- Fix leaky pipes and eliminate standing water under sinks and in bathrooms
- Reduce clutter, especially cardboard and paper stacks, which roaches use as harborage
- Empty indoor trash cans regularly and keep lids tightly sealed
When to Call a Professional
If you're seeing cockroaches during the day, you already have a significant infestation. Roaches are naturally nocturnal β when they appear in daylight, it typically means the population has outgrown its hiding space.
DIY sprays often scatter a population and drive them deeper into wall voids, making the problem worse in the long run. Professional treatment with gel bait and IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) breaks the breeding cycle and eliminates the colony at the source. IGR prevents nymphs from reaching reproductive maturity, collapsing the population over 2β4 weeks.
