The American cockroach — also called the palmetto bug or water bug — is the most common species we treat in Central Texas homes. Despite the name, it thrives here because of our warm, humid conditions. These roaches grow up to 2 inches long, run fast, and can fly when disturbed. They're mostly an outdoor species that moves indoors through plumbing and cracks in the foundation.
The German cockroach is smaller, brown, and prefers to live entirely indoors. Roaches need three things: food, water, and shelter. Cutting off access to these is your first line of defense:
- Store all food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs and spills immediately
- Fix leaky pipes and eliminate standing water under sinks and in bathrooms
- Reduce clutter, especially cardboard and paper stacks, which roaches use as harborage
- Empty indoor trash cans regularly and keep lids tightly sealed
